Tobacco & Nicotine Prevention

Tobacco & Nicotine Prevention
Helping schools prevent youth nicotine use — and respond with support when students need it.

Youth tobacco and nicotine use is both a health and education issue. Schools need more than stand-alone lessons or punitive discipline policies; they need coordinated approaches that combine prevention, strong policies, supportive intervention, trusted adults, and connections to resources.
Action for Healthy Kids helps schools, districts, state agencies, and community partners build practical, sustainable systems that support healthy choices and keep students connected to school and learning.
How Action for Healthy Kids Helps
We work with partners to:
-

Strengthen Tobacco-Free Schools policies
Policy development and hands-on implementation support.
-

Build adult capacity
Professional learning, coaching, and technical assistance.
-

Support restorative responses
Education-based responses to student tobacco and nicotine infractions.
-

Increase access to resources
Prevention, cessation, and early intervention resources.
-

Strengthen collaboration
Among schools, families, public health, and community partners.
Our goal is to help partners move from isolated programs toward coordinated prevention systems that are supportive, sustainable, and responsive to student needs.

Second Chance: A Supportive Alternative to Suspension
Second Chance is AFHK’s web-based educational program for middle and high school students who have a tobacco or nicotine policy infraction.
Designed as a supportive alternative to suspension, Second Chance helps students build knowledge and skills, reflect on their choices, and connect with resources — while staying connected to school and learning.
Our Approach in Action
Through a long-standing partnership with the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment’s State Tobacco Education and Prevention Partnership (STEPP), AFHK has supported Tobacco-Free Schools efforts across Colorado through training and technical assistance, policy support, and implementation of Second Chance.
Recent impact includes:
- 50 of 64 Colorado counties reached
- 97% of technical assistance recipients reported increased knowledge and skills to support Tobacco-Free Schools implementation
- 128 schools and 58 districts participating in Second Chance during the 2024–2025 school year
